Senate Republicans to block Ukraine funding after tempers flare at classified briefing

Senate Republican leaders are urging their GOP colleagues to block a bill that would provide over $61 billion in military and foreign aid to Ukraine, due to its lack of immigration and asylum reforms. The bill, proposed by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, combines President Biden’s request for emergency foreign aid with a bipartisan bill to crack down on the fentanyl supply chain and allows Republicans to offer the first amendment on border security. However, GOP members, led by Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, insist that major immigration and policy reforms need to be included in the bill, advocating for a ‘no’ vote. GOP frustration was evident during a classified briefing on the war in Ukraine, where senators clashed over border security.
