Senate Passes Defense Bill, Steering Clear of Far-Right Policy Dictates

The Senate passed an $886 billion defense bill, which includes a 5.2% pay raise for military personnel, expansion of the Defense Department’s ability to compete with China and Russia in hypersonic and nuclear weapons, and providing military assistance to Ukraine and Israel. The bill also extends a controversial warrantless surveillance program of foreign individuals until 2025. However, partisan restrictions on abortion, transgender care and diversity initiatives were not included. The legislation is likely to pass the House with bipartisan support. There is some backlash from House Republicans who are angry over dropped provisions related to reproductive health care, transgender health care, and diversity initiatives.
