San Jose creates ‘no return zone’ for homeless residents along river trail
The San Jose City Council has approved a $200,000 budget to remove roughly 20 homeless people living along the Guadalupe River Trail as part of efforts to revitalize the area. The city plans to remove existing tents by April and establish a “no return zone” to dissuade homeless residents from returning. While previous efforts saw the city move some homeless residents into interim and permanent housing, there are no housing options in the current plan. Officials expect the neighborhoods surrounding the trail to be impacted. The revitalization of the trail, seen as a major downtown amenity that connects neighborhoods to businesses, is supported by environmental group Sierra Club and the Children’s Discovery Museum.
