San Francisco prosecutors begin charging 80 protesters who blocked bridge while demanding cease-fire
San Francisco prosecutors have begun charging 80 protesters who blocked traffic for hours on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge last month, demanding a cease-fire in Gaza. The protest occurred during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. Those charged, part of the 200 protesters who obstructed traffic on the bridge’s upper deck, face charges of false imprisonment, refusing to comply with a peace officer, unlawful public assembly, refusing to disperse, and obstruction of a street, sidewalk, or other public place. Their arraignments are set for February. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins asserted that while free speech must be protected, it cannot compromise public safety.
