San Diego OKs sweeping developer incentives to build housing
The San Diego City Council has approved a package of developer incentives and regulatory changes to tackle the city’s housing crisis. The controversial proposals, which include a developer incentive that critics argue could worsen segregation, were passed in a 7-1 vote. The measures also provide incentives for building new single-room-occupancy hotels and convert businesses into housing, as well as easing rules for housing on public land and underutilized commercial sites. The move is expected to spur the construction of new homes and help the city meet a state-mandated goal of 108,000 new homes between 2021 and 2029. Critics say the measures are reckless and could damage the quality of life for many residents.
