Under the centuries-old custom of bona vacantia, in regions with historical connections to the Duchy of Cornwall or the Duchy of Lancaster, these unclaimed assets go to the king’s private estate, the Duchy of Lancaster. The Duchy claims these resources are, after certain costs, given to charities. The Guardian, however, has revealed a significant proportion of these bona vacantia funds are used for refurbishing properties owned and profitably rented by the king’s estate.
