Review: Poor Things – Chicago Reader

“Poor Things” is a film adaptation by Yorgos Lanthimos of the novel by Alasdair Gray. Starring Emma Stone as Bella Baxter, the story revolves around Bella’s resurrection by Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), her infantile curiosity about the world, and the love triangle involving Godwin’s protege, Max McCandles (Ramy Youssef), and lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo). The narrative tracks Bella’s journey from London to Lisbon to Paris as she embarks on a voyage of self-discovery and an exploration of love, suffering, and experience. The film’s balance of playful and intricate themes and Stone’s performance are particularly commended.
