Review: Emma Stone shines in fantastically funny, strange ‘Poor Things’

“Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” stars Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo, and is an adaptation of the 1992 Scottish novel by Alasdair Gray. Stone plays Bella Baxter, a woman reanimated after her suicide by Dr. Godwin Baxter, played by Willem Dafoe. The eccentric film follows her evolution from childlike curiosity to intellectual independence. The film combines Gothic, whimsical, and fantastical elements and features vivid pastels, black-and-white photography, and unusual animal experiments. “Poor Things” opens in theaters on Dec. 22.
