Republican-Led House to Vote on Alejandro Mayorkas Impeachment

The US House of Representatives will vote on the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas, on charges of willfully refusing to enforce border laws and breaching public trust. Republicans are pushing forward with the impeachment, accusing Mayorkas of dismantling former President Trump’s border policies and misrepresenting the state of the border. However, legal experts, including some conservatives, argue that Mayorkas has not committed high crimes and misdemeanors, the constitutional threshold for impeachment. If impeached, Mayorkas would be the first sitting cabinet member in US history to face such a charge. The impeachment effort is part of Republicans’ attempt to attack the Biden administration and Democrats over immigration policies.
