Rep. Joaquin Castro secures $1 million for San Antonio, Texas rail connections

U.S. Representative Joaquin Castro has announced that his office secured $1 million in federal funding to extend rail service between San Antonio and Austin in Texas. The funding comes from federal Corridor Identification and Development awards to the Texas Department of Transportation and is part of a larger $2.5 million grant to build new rail lines and extend existing ones in Texas. This development comes after Bexar County and Travis County officials expressed interest in better connecting the two areas. The push for a rail connection between San Antonio and Austin was renewed after grassroots organizations began lobbying local politicians for the cause. The original Lone Star Rail District project, which aimed to connect the two cities, fizzled out in 2016.
