Rep. George Santos expelled from House

The US House of Representatives has voted to expel GOP New York Representative George Santos. Following this expulsion, Santos’ office will be administratively treated as a vacancy with the House Clerk taking control. The House Clerk will also inform the Governor of New York, currently Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul, about the vacancy in New York’s third district. It is then up to Gov. Hochul to schedule a special election to replace Santos, as per New York State law. Despite his expulsion, Santos retains certain privileges as a former member of Congress because he has not been convicted of a felony. Santos is facing 23 federal charges, including fraud related to Covid-19 unemployment benefits, misuse of campaign funds, and lying about his personal finances on House disclosure reports.
