Richard Hunt, who emerged as one of the most notable sculptors in American history, passed away at his Chicago home at the age of 88. Born in Chicago in 1935, Hunt was renowned as the foremost African-American sculptor of the 20th century. His artistic expression and commitment to civil rights was profoundly influenced by his attendance at Emmett Till’s funeral. Hunt’s sculptures, particularly his public art, have made a significant impact across the U.S., with over 160 commissions in 24 states and Washington, D.C., and more than 30 examples in and around Chicago. His most notable works include the 35-foot-high Ida B. Wells Light of Truth National Monument in Bronzeville and “Hero Construction” at the Art Institute of Chicago.
