Record-breaking 378 officers shot in the line of duty in 2023: FOP report

The National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) reported that 378 police officers were shot on duty in 2023, which marks a 14% increase from the previous year and a 60% increase since 2018. In addition, there were 115 ambush-style attacks on law enforcement throughout the year. Despite the surge in incidents, the number of fatalities remained lower at 46, a fact attributed to advancements in medical trauma science and anti-ballistic technology. FOP President Patrick Yoes has urged Congress to pass the Protect and Serve Act, creating federal criminal penalties for targeting police officers.
