Putin lauds Russian unity in his New Year’s address

Russian President, Vladimir Putin, delivered his address to the nation, describing 2023 as a year of unity marked by “solidarity, mercy and fortitude” amongst Russian citizens. Putin addressed the ongoing war in Ukraine, emphasizing that Russia will not retreat and lauded the Russian armed forces as heroes. Furthermore, analysts have described 2023 as a largely positive year for Putin, as the fight for the bombed-out Ukrainian city of Bakhmut was won and a revolt against him was defused. Putin is seeking re-election in March 2024, with constitutional reforms potentially allowing him to remain in power until 2036. The President also condemned the recent shelling in Belgorod that killed 24 people and wounded 108.
