Punxsutawney Phil predicts an early spring at Groundhog Day festivities – Chicago Tribune

Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog celebrated at the famous Groundhog Day event, predicted an early spring in Gobbler’s Knob, Pennsylvania. The prediction is based on whether the groundhog sees his shadow, with no shadow indicating an early spring. The annual event attracts around 10,000 attendees and culminates in the midwinter forecast. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro announced that Phil will serve as Pennsylvania’s official meteorologist. There are more than a dozen active groundhog clubs in Pennsylvania, and weather predicting groundhogs also appear in 28 U.S. states and Canadian provinces.
