Protesters Call for Cease-Fire in Israel-Hamas War Block Northbound Traffic in Seattle

A blockade by demonstrators advocating for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas conflict resulted in a traffic disruption on Interstate 5 in Seattle. The protest, happening between Interstate 90 and Mercer Street, caused a 6-mile backup.

Traffic was redirected onto eastbound I-90, as announced by the state Department of Transportation on social media platform X.

The protest began approximately at 1:15 p.m., with the Washington State Patrol remarking that their troopers were on route to handle the situation. The Seattle Police Department advised people to avoid the area.

Meanwhile, thousands of extra demonstrators gathered on the Olive Way overpass, cheering in support of the blockade. The crowd echoed chants of “free, free Palestine” and “the occupation has got to go.”

The Oct. 7 attack by Hamas from Gaza into southern Israel resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities, with an additional 250 held hostage, according to The Associated Press. Israel’s retaliation via air, ground, and sea assault in Gaza has led to over 22,400 deaths, with women and children making up two-thirds of the count, as per the Health Ministry in the Hamas-governed territory.
