Prosecutors Seek to Protect Witnesses in Trump Classified Documents Case
Prosecutors have requested a federal judge to protect the identities of several witnesses involved in the criminal case against former President Donald J. Trump over allegations of illegally retaining classified documents. The prosecutors argue that these witnesses could face “intolerable and needless risks” if their identities were disclosed prior to the trial, citing a pattern of threats, harassment, and intimidation towards individuals involved in cases associated with Trump. This request follows Judge Aileen M. Cannon’s decision in favor of Trump’s legal team to identify some of the witnesses in court papers. The prosecutors have also opposed Trump’s lawyers’ request to access a secret government filing concerning classified discovery evidence, under the Classified Information Procedures Act. Trump’s lawyers are likely to use a report by special counsel Robert K. Hur, which found that President Biden had willfully retained and disclosed classified materials when he was out of office, but that criminal charges were not warranted, in their defence.
