A Texas woman gets 90-year sentence for professional cyclist’s murder

A Texas jury sentenced a woman to 90 years in prison for the 2022 shooting of rising professional cyclist Anna Moriah “Mo” Wilson, following a 43-day international search for the killer.

Kaitlin Armstrong was convicted of murder after a short three-hour deliberation by the jurors. Investigators believe Armstrong tracked Wilson to her apartment and shot her three times.

“Justice has been served,” said Eric Wilson, victim’s father. While acknowledging the permanent change in their lives, the family expressed readiness to move forward.

Prosecutors believe Armstrong killed the 25-year-old cyclist out of jealousy. Wilson had dated Armstrong’s boyfriend briefly months before and spent the day with him before she was killed.

Despite the defense attorney’s plea for leniency, Armstrong, 35, will be eligible for parole only in 30 years under current Texas law.

The loss of Wilson was called a tragedy by Rick Cofer, Armstrong’s defense attorney, expressing sympathy for both families involved.

Following the sentencing, emotional scenes unfolded in the courtroom. Armstrong’s father was seen wiping tears as her family sobbed. Wilson’s family hugged each other, expressing relief upon hearing the verdict.

Wilson, a Vermont native and former alpine skier at Dartmouth College, was a rising star in professional cycling. Armstrong tracked Wilson through a fitness app, shooting her twice in the head and once through the heart.

Armstrong evaded authorities by flying to Costa Rica after disposing of her vehicle. There, she spent over $6000 on cosmetic surgery and hair color change to alter her appearance. She was eventually arrested at a beachside hostel.

She faces a separate felony escape charge after an attempted escape during a medical appointment outside jail.
