Prince William supervisors approve Digital Gateway project over protest

Prince William County’s board of supervisors has approved the construction of the Digital Gateway complex, a large data center complex in a mostly rural area near Interstate 66 and a Civil War battlefield site. The development faced opposition from nearby residents who feared the complex would damage the environment and ruin views at the nearby Manassas National Battlefield Park. The complex, expected to be completed over the next two decades, will feature as many as 34 data centers spread across 2,100 acres, making the county one of the world’s largest hubs for internet traffic. The estimated total investment in the project will be at least $40 billion. The project is expected to generate an estimated $400 million in annual tax revenue for the county.
