Priest dies after being assaulted inside church residence in Fort Calhoun
A priest from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, died after an assault in the church’s rectory where he lived. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about an attempted break-in at around 5 a.m. Upon arrival, deputies found a suspect and Father Stephen Gutgsell, who was suffering from assault injuries. Although Father Gutgsell was taken to Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, he later succumbed to his wounds. The suspect is currently in custody at the Washington County Jail, and the Sheriff’s Office has stated that there is no threat to the community.
