Presidents & First Ladies Honor Rosalynn Carter

Carter, who entered hospice care in February, made the journey from Plains, Ga., to Atlanta for the event at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church at Emory University, with President Biden, former President Bill Clinton, and all five living first ladies present.

Arriving in a wheelchair, Carter was warmly received by the crowd, despite his frailty. Jason Carter, grandson and chairman of the Carter Center board, spoke of his grandfather’s determination to be present for his wife’s tribute despite his fading health.

Rosalynn Carter: Tireless Advocate and Inspiration

Due to his health, Carter did not speak at the gathering. But friends and family celebrated Mrs. Carter, her strong will, and her dedication to helping the vulnerable. Kathryn Cade, former project director for Mrs. Carter, praised her tireless dedication, describing her as a “remarkable woman.”

Mrs. Carter’s son, James Earl Carter III, credited his mother with saving his life and many others through her advocacy work. Despite the 1980 election loss, the Carters continued to serve as “missionaries,” contributing significantly to society.

The Legacy of Rosalynn Carter

Rosalynn Carter died at 96 at their family home in Plains, Ga., where she had lived for most of her life. She was remembered for her advocacy for mental health services and transformation of the role of first lady.

Grandson Jason Carter championed her work fighting the stigma of mental illness as her proudest achievement, lauding her for being ahead of her time.

After a funeral service at Maranatha Baptist Church, Mrs. Carter will be buried at the Carter Home and Garden. Mr. Carter plans to be laid to rest next to her when the time comes.
