Snowy Storm System to Affect Millions of Americans Returning Home from Thanksgiving

A snowy storm system, which blanketed the Rockies with up to 28 inches of snow last week, will sweep through the Plains and Midwest this weekend, affecting millions of Americans returning home from their Thanksgiving holiday.

Winter weather alerts are in effect from the northern Texas Panhandle to northwest Illinois, impacting over 8 million people, with several inches of snow expected into Sunday morning. Lighter snows are also expected to expand to the north and northeast Sunday and Sunday night.

Major Cities to Experience Snowfall and Possible Travel Disruptions

Wichita and Topeka in Kansas; Kansas City, Mo.; Chicago; and Milwaukee and Madison in Wisconsin are all predicted to experience accumulating snow, potentially causing travel disruptions through Sunday night.

Areas Affected and Predicted Snowfall

The heaviest snow is forecast in central Kansas, where 4 to 8 inches could fall. Wichita and Topeka have both been issued winter storm warnings by the National Weather Service, stating that “travel will be difficult”. Most of this snowfall is expected Saturday and Saturday night, with sunny skies forecast for Sunday.

Snow will spread into northern Missouri late Saturday and continue into Sunday morning, with Kansas City expecting its first accumulated snowfall of the season with forecasts predicting 1 to 4 inches. Early Sunday morning, the snow will spread over northern Illinois, Wisconsin, and western Michigan. The storm system is expected to weaken as it progresses to the Northeast, so mainly light snow is forecast in this area, with about 1 to 3 inches expected.

Chicago, Milwaukee, and Madison, Wisconsin are all expected to see about an inch of snowfall, mostly occurring Sunday morning. In west-central Michigan along Lake Michigan, a narrow zone of heavier snow with about 2 to 4 inches is possible.

On Sunday night into Monday, some snow will head towards the interior Northeast while rain develops in eastern New England. Several inches of snow could fall in high elevations and areas downwind of Lake Erie in western New York and northwest Pennsylvania.

The storm’s heaviest snowfall occurred in Wyoming last Thursday and Friday, with 22 to 28 inches in Lander. Accumulated snow has also fallen in several other states, with significant totals recorded in Riverton, Wyoming (18 inches), Casper, Wyoming (11 inches), Taos, New Mexico (9 inches), and Cheyenne, Wyoming (9 inches).
