Poland’s political war heats up – POLITICO

Poland’s political conflict between Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda remains unresolved. The clash was triggered by Tusk’s swift moves after coming into power, including purging the previous nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party government’s associates, taking control of public media, and reversing justice system changes. The controversy has been heightened by Tusk’s Justice Minister and Chief Prosecutor Adam Bodnar replacing the head of the National Public Prosecutor’s Office without Duda’s approval, and the imprisonment of two PiS politicians convicted of power abuse. Tusk has vowed to restore Poland as a European liberal democracy and prosecute those accused of wrongdoing during PiS’s reign.
