Philly DA Larry Krasner sues over law reducing his authority
District Attorney Larry Krasner is suing to block a new law, Act 40, which allows a special prosecutor appointed by the state Attorney General to take over the investigation of crimes within SEPTA in Philadelphia. Krasner argues that the law is unconstitutional as it infringes on residents’ right to elect their chief prosecutor and disproportionately impacts non-white residents. Act 40’s author, state Senator Wayne Langerholc, asserts the law only affects SEPTA and does not otherwise reduce the DA’s authority. Attorney General Michelle Henry says she is obliged to presume the law is constitutional, but has yet to appoint a special prosecutor. Critics of the law see it as an extension of Republican efforts to remove Krasner from office.
