Philadelphia City Council bans wearing ski masks in public – NBC10 Philadelphia

Philadelphia’s City Council approved legislation banning the wearing of ski masks, otherwise known as a shiesty, in public places including schools, day cares, parks, city-owned buildings, and public transportation. The bill passed by a vote of 13 to 2 and violators will face a $250 fine, with an additional $2,000 fee if worn during the commission of a crime. Supporters of the ban, including Councilman Anthony Phillips and Councilmember Isaiah Thomas, believe the bill will enhance safety and aid law enforcement in identifying criminals. However, opponents, like Councilwoman Jamie Gauthier and members of the public including representatives from the ACLU, argue the bill could lead to marginalization and criminalization of young men, particularly those of color, as well as potentially unconstitutional prejudicial policing practices. The ban will take immediate effect once approved by the mayor.
