Penguin Random House, teachers union, authors sue Iowa over book ban

Iowa’s largest teachers union, the nation’s largest publisher Penguin Random House, and best-selling authors Laurie Halse Anderson, John Green, Malinda Lo, and Jodi Picoult are suing the state over its new law barring books with sexual content from schools. The law also prevents discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity from kindergarten to sixth grade and requires parental notification if a student requests to use different pronouns. The lawsuit, filed in the Southern District of Iowa, seeks to block this ban and have it declared unconstitutional, asserting that it violates the First and 14th amendments of the U.S. Constitution. This suit follows a similar one filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and Lambda Legal against the same law.
