Paris votes whether to hit SUVs with eye-popping parking costs in latest green drive before Olympics

Parisians were asked to vote on a proposal to increase parking fees for SUVs in an effort to make the city greener and friendlier for pedestrians and cyclists ahead of this year’s Olympic Games. The proposal, pushed by Socialist Mayor Anne Hidalgo, aims to triple the parking fees for out-of-town SUV drivers. The mayor argued that SUVs take up too much space, contribute to pollution, and cause more traffic accidents. The proposed parking fee for SUVs in central Paris for the first two hours would be 18 euros ($19.5), compared to 6 euros for smaller cars. A six-hour stay for SUVs would cost 225 euros ($243), versus 75 euros for smaller vehicles.
