Palestinian American student shot in Vermont paralyzed from the chest down
Hisham Awartani, a Palestinian Irish American student who was one of three shot last weekend in Burlington, Vermont, is paralyzed from the chest down, according to his mother. A bullet lodged in his spine caused the paralysis, and he may not be able to walk again. A GoFundMe campaign has been created to cover medical expenses. The shooting incident, which also involved Kinnan Abdalhamid and Tahseen Ali Ahmad, occurred with no provocation as they were speaking Arabic and wearing Palestinian keffiyehs. Jason Eaton, 48, has been arrested and pleaded not guilty to attempted murder charges; the victims’ families and advocacy organizations want the incident investigated as a hate crime.
