Pakistan election results are delayed, but wins are reported for independents backed by Khan’s party

The results of Pakistan’s elections were delayed due to connectivity issues following a vote marred by violence, a mobile service shutdown, and the sidelining of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his party. Despite Khan’s disqualification from contesting the vote, local media reported victories by independents backed by his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. PTI candidates ran as independents as the Supreme Court and Election Commission ruled they couldn’t use the party symbol. While the results were expected to be released to the public on Friday, the Interior Ministry attributed the delay to security precautions. The results could mark the biggest election upset in Pakistan’s political history in the last 50 years, with PTI-backed independents reportedly leading in dozens of constituencies.
