Oregon high court says GOP lawmakers who staged walkout can’t run for re-election
The Oregon Supreme Court has ruled that ten Republican state senators who staged a record-long walkout in 2021 to protest against bills concerning abortion, transgender healthcare, and gun rights are ineligible to run for re-election. This decision upholds the secretary of state’s prior ruling to disqualify these senators based on Measure 113. This measure, approved by Oregon voters in 2022, amends the state constitution to block lawmakers with more than ten unexcused absences from re-election. Five senators — Tim Knopp, Daniel Bonham, Suzanne Weber, Dennis Linthicum, and Lynn Findley — sued over this decision. The court case involved detailed arguments over the precise wording and interpretation of Measure 113 text as added to the constitution.
