Omaha man convicted of killing police officer dies at corrections facility

Edward Poindexter, who was convicted for the murder of an Omaha police officer in 1971, has died at a Nebraska corrections facility. His cause of death is yet to be determined, and a grand jury will investigate his death under Nebraska law. Poindexter and David Rice, who died in 2016, were sentenced to life imprisonment for planting a suitcase bomb that killed officer Larry Minard. Advocates have been pushing for Poindexter’s release for years. In 2022, the Omaha World-Herald published a story highlighting the questionable evidence leading to their convictions.
