Oklahoma prepares to execute man for 2001 double slaying despite self-defense claim
Oklahoma is preparing to execute Phillip Hancock, 59, for a 2001 double homicide despite his claims of self-defense. Oklahoma’s Pardon and Parole Board recommended sparing Hancock’s life, but Governor Kevin Stitt has not acted on the recommendation. Hancock insists that he shot and killed Robert Jett Jr., 37, and James Lynch, 58, in self-defense after they attacked him. However, state attorneys argue Hancock’s accounts do not align with the physical evidence. This would mark the fourth execution in Oklahoma this year and the 11th since the state resumed executions in October 2021 after a nearly six-year break due to problems with lethal injections in 2014 and 2015.
