Ohio legislature sends gender-affirming-care ban to governor

Ohio legislators have passed the Safe Act, a bill banning gender-affirming care for minors, which prohibits hormone therapy, puberty blockers and gender reassignment surgery for people under 18. The bill, which is now awaiting the governor’s signature, is expected to impact families of transgender youths in states with similar bans who have been traveling to Ohio for gender-affirming care. The Safe Act also prohibits transgender girls from playing on sports teams designated for women in high school and college. The Ohio Children’s Hospital Association has served approximately 3,300 children in its gender clinics, with 35% receiving hormones, 7% receiving puberty blockers, and 65% not prescribed medication. The bill permits children already receiving gender-affirming care in Ohio to continue their treatment.
