Off-duty pilot accused of attempting to shut off plane engines mid-flight indicted on 84 counts

Alaska Airlines pilot Joseph Emerson was indicted on 84 counts, including endangering an aircraft and recklessly endangering another person after he allegedly attempted to shut off the passenger plane’s engines mid-flight in October. His attorneys argue that Emerson did not intend to harm anyone and was disappointed with the charges as he had “no criminal intent.” The grand jury elected not to charge him with 84 counts of attempted murder. Emerson admitted to consuming magic mushrooms 48 hours prior to the incident and thought he was in a dream at the time. He is set to be arraigned on December 7 and also faces similar federal charges.
