Nurse’s complaint led to IDPH investigation, Vista Medical Center East losing trauma designation in Waukegan, Illinois

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has stripped Waukegan’s Vista Medical Center of its Level 2 Trauma Center designation, citing its lack of essential services like a blood bank, anesthesia, neurology, urology, and a full-time Trauma Coordinator. The decision has sparked concern among Lake County officials and residents about the potential impact on emergency health services in the area, with the nearest Trauma Centers now 20 to 30 minutes further away. The hospital’s owner, California-based American Healthcare Systems, disputes the state’s findings and is working with IDPH to regain the designation, arguing there was an error in the decision to remove it.
