Chris Christie, former governor of New Jersey, was caught on a hot microphone criticizing candidate Nikki Haley moments before announcing his withdrawal from the presidential race. Christie called Haley, who he was stepping aside for, was “gonna get smoked.” His exit from the race comes after he began criticizing his rivals after previously chastising them for focusing on each other instead of Trump. Despite having a reputation for combativeness and creating viral moments, Christie’s campaign was largely overshadowed by his role as a Trump critic. His support among New Hampshire GOP primary voters never exceeded the teens while Trump remained dozens of points ahead.
