North Carolina man settles for millions after wrongful conviction, 44 years in prison : NPR
Ronnie Wallace Long, a man falsely convicted and imprisoned for 44 years, will receive a $25 million settlement from a central North Carolina city and the state of North Carolina. The settlement resolves a lawsuit accusing authorities of misconduct. The city of Concord, responsible for $22 million of the settlement, also issued a public written apology for its role in Long’s imprisonment. Long was wrongfully convicted of burglary and rape in 1976, and key evidence that could have helped prove his innocence was not disclosed during his trial. His conviction was vacated in 2020, and he was later granted a full pardon of innocence.
