No charges for New Mexico officers who knocked on wrong door before fatal shooting

In New Mexico, authorities have decided not to charge three police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Robert Dotson, 52, who was killed after officers responded to the wrong address while addressing a domestic violence call. The officers fired dozens of shots at Dotson when he appeared at his door holding a gun. The Dotson family has filed a lawsuit against the department, alleging that the police did not announce themselves and that Dotson was blinded by their flashlights. Despite the incident, New Mexico Deputy Attorney General Greer Staley determined that the officers’ actions were “reasonable, appropriate and consistent with generally accepted police practices”.
