NLRB regional official decides Dartmouth men’s basketball players are school employees

A regional official of the National Labor Relations Board has ruled that Dartmouth basketball players are school employees, paving the way for potentially the first labor union for NCAA athletes. This followed a petition signed by all 15 members of the team in September to join Local 560 of the Service Employees International Union. The move could allow the players to negotiate over salary and working conditions, including practice hours and travel. The NCAA and universities nationwide have opposed such a move, insisting athletes are students, not employees. The school may appeal the decision to the national board, but the team members have already shown a desire to unionize.
