NDAA: Senate passes sweeping defense policy bill

The U.S Senate has approved the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2024, which sets the policy agenda and authorizes $886 billion in funding for the Department of Defense, an increase of $28 billion from the previous year. The legislation includes a 5.2% pay raise for military personnel and extends a law allowing warrantless foreign surveillance, although this has attracted criticism over potential misuse. The bill also intends to assign a watchdog for U.S aid to Ukraine and establish a National Archives collection of government records on unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UFOs. Provisions related to abortion and transgender healthcare access, which were included in the House defense policy bill, were not included in this legislation.
