The plane was supposed to land at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, located within the Marine Corps Base Hawaii on Oahu, Fox mentioned. A photo from the scene shared by NBC affiliate KHNL showed the aircraft in the water.

A spokesman for the Navy’s Third Fleet revealed that the plane’s occupants evacuated immediately after it hit the water. The crew belongs to Whidbey Island, Washington-based VP-4 squadron (Skinny Dragons), and they were present “in support of maritime homeland defense”, Lt. Mohammad Issa commented.

To prevent the spread of hazardous materials, booms were placed around the scene. Investigations by divers found no evidence of fuel leakage from the structurally sound aircraft, the Third Fleet stated on Tuesday.

“The Navy will launch an investigation to determine the mishap’s cause and contributing factors”, the fleet added. The Poseidon, a long-range patrol and reconnaissance aircraft equipped with two engines and measuring just over 129 feet long, was carrying three pilots and six crew members at the time of the incident.
