Navy Plane Overshoots Runway in Hawaii

A Navy plane overshot a runway during rainy weather and landed in Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii on Monday. All nine people on board were uninjured, according to authorities.

The Coast Guard quickly responded and then cancelled rescue operations as everyone involved was safe, stated Petty Officer Ryan Fisher, a Coast Guard spokesperson.

Investigation Underway for Plane Accident

The P-8A aircraft went off the runway at Marine Corps Base in Hawaii. Marine Corps spokesperson Gunnery Sgt. Orlando Perez was unable to provide details about the cause of the incident.

Witness Accounts

A photo by witness Diane Dircks captured the plane partially submerged just offshore, an image reminiscent of the “Miracle on the Hudson” in 2009. Dircks and her family were returning from a truncated boat trip due to bad weather when her daughter noticed the plane.

Emergency Services Respond

The Honolulu Fire Department received a 911 call for a downed aircraft around 2 p.m, under cloudy, rainy conditions with visibility of about 1 mile, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Thomas Vaughan.
