The U.N. climate summit (COP28) in the United Arab Emirates saw leaders of developing nations pressuring wealthier countries to aid in combating global warming and lifting financial burdens. They emphasized the importance of their own natural resources in absorbing carbon. Pope Francis voiced his support for these nations in a letter, highlighting the environmental destruction’s impacts on the poor. During the conference, 50 major oil companies pledged to achieve near-zero methane emissions and end routine flaring by 2030. The companies also committed to reach “net zero” for their operational emissions by 2050. Countries including the United States, France, and over 20 others advocated for the tripling of nuclear energy by 2050.
