NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory slashing 8% of workforce
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is reducing its workforce by approximately 8%, accounting for 530 employees, due to uncertainty about its federal funding. The layoffs impact both technical and support staff, as well as around 40 contractors. The Pasadena-based research and development lab is yet to receive approval for its 2024 fiscal year budget, which includes $300 million for its Mars Sample Return Project. Efforts to preserve the workforce, such as a hiring freeze and cuts to burden budgets, have proven insufficient to carry the lab through the fiscal year. Detailed information about the layoffs is expected to be announced soon.
