Minnesota State Emblem Commission approves new state seal

The State Emblems Redesign Commission has approved one of five design finalists for a new state flag and seal for Minnesota. The chosen design, S224, was created by artist Ross Bruggink and depicts Minnesota’s official state bird, the common loon. Bruggink said the seal signified “pride and energy”, with other elements including waves symbolizing Minnesota’s abundance of lakes, wild rice representing agriculture, and 19 stars representing Minnesota as the 19th state to join the union. The commission plans to finalize any potential changes to the design at their next meeting on Dec. 12. The commission’s goal is to have a new seal and flag in place by Jan. 1.
