Minnesota commission picks top state seal finalist that includes a loon

Minnesota’s state seal will be redesigned featuring a loon, the state bird, at its center, a first major redesign since 1858. The design, by Shorewood designer Ross Bruggink, was chosen as a top finalist by the State Emblems Redesign Commission, after thousands of public votes and comments. The seal includes symbols like wild rice, pine trees, and the North Star, which embodies the state motto, “l’étoile du nord.” The commission will deliberate on final changes for the design, and was established to change both the flag and seal following criticism on the current emblems. Bruggink will submit variations of his seal design ahead of the Jan. 1 deadline.
