Migrants in Chicago: Mayor Brandon Johnson, Governor JB Pritzker meet on migrant crisis

Top Illinois leaders, including Governor JB Pritzker, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, have met to discuss their response to the migrant crisis. Over the last 18 months, more than 35,000 migrants have arrived in Chicago. The state has offered financial assistance to the city to house migrants, however, this funding has not been allocated to a specific project yet. Mayor Johnson emphasized the importance of challenging the federal government’s response to the crisis, citing it as an international issue. Small businesses and private donations, along with $17 million from the state, have supported meals for migrants at 21 different shelter sites.
