Mid-Atlantic and Northeast are experiencing record-long snow drought
From southern Virginia to New York City, a lack of substantial snowfall has set a record. For nearly two years, there has been no snowfall of an inch or more per day. The absence of snow, occurring during unusually warm winters, is seen as a likely result of climate change. Long-standing records for periods without snow have been broken in places like New York City’s Central Park and Washington’s Dulles International Airport. Even typically snowy areas like Boston and Pittsburgh have not seen more than 3 inches of snow in a day for almost two years. Amid warming climate trends and decreasing snowfall, this winter may bring a halt to these snowless streaks due to the ongoing El Niño climate pattern, which generally increases winter moisture in the South and Mid-Atlantic.
