The shooting was premeditated, with Crumbley bringing a gun to school on the day of the incident. Life sentences for teenagers are rare in Michigan, but Oakland county prosecutor Karen McDonald argued that such a sentence was appropriate given the severity of the crime. Judge Kwame Rowe agreed, noting the deep trauma caused to the community. Crumbley’s parents, Jennifer and James Crumbley, are also awaiting trial on involuntary manslaughter charges, accused of making a gun accessible at home and neglecting their son’s mental health.
