Charles Michel, President of the European Council, will participate in the EU parliamentary elections in June, prompting him to leave his position before the end of his tenure. His departure raises the possibility of Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, leading the Council of Europe, as Hungary will hold the Council presidency from July to December 2024. Michel emphasized that there is sufficient time to choose his successor to avoid Orbán’s nomination, stating there are many tools available to the Council to do so if there is political will.
